Ways you can help your Child read at home
There are 3 ways to read a book.
1. Read the Words
2. Read the Pictures
3. Retell the story
The biggest problem our students have is that they read and they don't understand what they read. When you teach your child to read you can follow these 4 steps to help ensure your child's reading success.
1st Choose a best fit book. This is a book that your child can read 95% of the words. If they read 20 words in the text and need help with more than 2 words the text is too difficult. You can still read these with them but they will have a hard time understanding what they are reading by themselves.
*If your child is having a hard time reading through a word practice sounding out the word, or have your child go back and reread the sentence to see if you can find a word that makes sense using pictures and beginning sounds. Ask them what the beginning sound of the confusing word is and then reread to find a word that makes sense.
2nd have the child take a picture walk. This is simply looking through the book at the pages and trying to gain understanding of what they will read.
3rd While reading, ask them questions about what is going on in the story. How they feel about it and what they think will happen next (prediction).
4th After you read check for understanding. Ask them questions about what happened in the story. Who are some of the characters? How the characters feel?
When reading or looking at news paper, magazine, or book you can:
Talk about text features: Titles, headings of articles, captions on the side, or picture graphics.
